A stone house under a thatched roof at sunrise, glass doors opening onto a lawn, stepping stones across the grass

Photographed · the stone house

The stone house

Stone walls, a thatched roof, glass onto the lawn. An en-suite bathroom and air conditioning, which the mud houses do not have. If somebody in your party will not enjoy a cold night and a bucket, this is the one to book.

A sitting room with teal sofas and bright block-printed cushions against a rough stone wall, a mirror and plants

The sitting room. Stone left rough, everything else soft.

A bedroom with a pink bedspread, stone walls hung with framed prints, and glass doors onto a balcony

A bedroom. The doors open; the ridge is on the other side of them.

Red chairs round a table on a railed terrace looking out over scrub to the Aravalli ridge

The terrace. This is the view the whole farm is named for.

A wooden dining table in a stone room, framed folk-art prints on the walls, light from windows on both sides

Where you eat. Inside, at a table, which the mud houses cannot offer.

A tiled bathroom with a washbasin on a wooden cabinet, mirror, WC and a patterned floor

En-suite, tiled, indoors. Hot water here. Not in the mud houses.

The stone house seen through heavy red bougainvillea, steps up to the door

From below, in December. The bougainvillea is on the bank all winter.

Listed on Airbnb as Aravali Farm Stay, and the only one of the three with air conditioning. Everything written further down this page about cold nights and unreliable water is about the mud houses.

Press play · 1:04 Inside a mud house: a low bed under block-printed cushions, bamboo rising to a point, a window onto the fields

One minute, walking through. The bed, the bamboo frame rising to a point, the window. Shot in November, sound on if you want it.

Inside an A-frame mud house: a bamboo frame rising to a point, a low bed, two lamps and a small window

The same room, still. One small window, two lamps.

The two thatched A-frame houses by day, standing in mown grass with planting around them and trees behind

The same two by day. Grass, planting, and the trees that were put in around them.

The two A-frame houses lit from inside at night, seen through a bamboo gate

And after dark. Power is not reliable here. This is what they look like when it is working.

What the mud houses are like

The houses sit on the high ground, which is the only part of the parcel from which you can see most of the farm at once. The track up to them is sand. In the cool months the nights are cold enough for a blanket and the mornings are the reason to come.

Between January and April the orchard below is in flower and the bees are working it, so the noise you wake up to is not traffic. Kinnow is ready in January, which is also the best weather. If you are choosing a month and have no other constraint, choose one of those four.

This is a working farm with a camping site on it. Not a resort. Somebody will be irrigating at six in the morning.

Be honest with yourself about this

If an unbroken night of power, a hot shower on demand and a signal strong enough to take a call matter to you this week, this is the wrong week. We spell it all out below because people have turned up expecting otherwise.

What is true of the mud houses and the camping site

Connectivity
No wi-fi. Mobile signal varies across the five acres and is not dependable for a call. Plan to be out of contact.
Water
Groundwater, from the same borewell that runs the nine irrigation zones.
Power
Unreliable across the whole farm. Expect it to go. Bring a torch and a charged power bank — the stone house has air conditioning but not its own supply.
Season
Cool months are the good months. Summer here is the heat that collapsed the apiary.
Getting there
Ladpuri, Khairthal-Tijara, Rajasthan — about ninety minutes from Delhi.
The farm
Working, all day, around you. Irrigation starts early.

What the farm still has to tell you

We have not guessed at any of these. They are the things we still owe you an answer on.

CapacityHow many people each house sleeps, and how many the camping site takes.
What a night includesBedding, meals, who cooks, and whether anything is served at all.
BathroomsAttached or shared, hot water or not, and what the camping site uses.
The last mileWhether the sand track is drivable in a normal car, and where to park.
Children and accessibilityMinimum age if any, and whether the rise can be reached without stairs.
The washroom inside a mud house: a basin set into the mud wall, a mirror, a WC, dried grass in the corner

The bathroom. Attached, inside the house, built into the mud wall. This is the question we are asked first and it now has an answer.

No photograph of the camping site

Pitches on the flat ground, in daylight, with the rise behind them.

We have pictures of tents. We are not sure they are ours, so they are not here.

A worker watering the planted rows at dawn, the sun low behind a line of trees

First light, from the beds. Somebody is irrigating. The view from the rise at the same hour is still not photographed.

Two of the three now exist. The row is left as it is so you can see which.

Dates, prices and availability all live on the listings. We sell nothing here, and nothing on this page is a quote.

The conditions above — cold nights, unreliable power, no hot shower — describe the mud houses and the camping site. The stone house has an en-suite and air conditioning, and is the one to book if that matters.
